Birthday Book Club

The Ladera Birthday Book Club (BBC) was started the first year Ladera opened its doors in 2001. Since that time, Ladera families have donated nearly 1,000 new books to the library's collection. This is a large part of the total collection of more than 8,000 books.

We are so thankful to the families who have participated and invite every student to celebrate their birthday in the Ladera library. If your child wishes to participate in the BBC, he/she can simply bring in a new, hard bound, gift wrapped book to the library during their birthday month*. Students can choose their new favorite book from the bookstore or get ideas from Mrs. Shaw's BBC Wish List. A letter will go home to your child during their birthday month reminding them of the opportunity to participate; the Wish List will be included at that time as well.

During your child’s weekly class visit to the library, they (along with the librarian, Mrs. Shaw) can present the book to the library in front of their class. Mrs. Shaw will then take your child's photo to add to the Birthday Book Club window and add the book to the library's collection, marking it with a special spine label and donation book plate inside the front cover that includes the student's name, teacher and the year they donated the book. Students who participate in the Birthday Book Club will also receive recognition in the monthly Ladera Newsletter.

This is a great way to share the love of reading with the whole school!! Feel free to come in and see the great books we have received from our very generous Ladera families!

*All students may participate any time of year, so summer birthdays (and others who are unable to bring a book during their actual birthday month) are invited to bring their books anytime they wish. Since the library closes the last week in May for inventory, we request that all donations be made prior to mid-May. In particular, May and June birthdays should consider making donations in April and early May 2010.
